Historic Lupton City began when members of the Lupton and Frierson families created the Dixie Mercerizing Company and built a yarn spinning mill in 1919, followed by construction of ''company homes'' beginning in 1920 through circa 1935, as well as other amenities to complete a self-contained mill town. (post office, ball field, gymnasium, school, etc.). Dixie sold off the company-built bungalows for private ownership in the 1950s, and changed its name to Dixie Yarns in 1965.
